A+Bonus BucksSM
A+Bonus Bucks are points that accrue with each purchase using the Giant Card. (Please note: Gift cards (excluding store brand gift cards), pharmacy, gas, alcohol and/or cigarette purchases are excluded from accruing points.) At the end of each month, the A+Bonus Bucks are used in a calculation to determine your school's cash total, which, then, is automatically credited to your school's account. Customers can support a school(s) (up to three) to benefit from the A+Bonus Bucks that accrue.
What are the program dates for the 2009-2010 school year?
The program begins October 9, 2009 and runs through March 25, 2010.
How are A+Bonus Bucks earned during purchases?
Your school's monthly A+Bonus Bucks points is divided by ALL participating schools' monthly A+Bonus Bucks points. The result (answer) is then multiplied by the A+Bonus Bucks monthly dollar reward (approximately $330,000*). This result (answer) is your school's monthly dollar award.
THE FOLLOWING NUMBERS USED ARE FOR EXAMPLE PURPOSES ONLY:
- A+ Elementary earned 100 points in the month of October
- When combined, all participating A+ schools points equaled 700,000 points in the month of October
- 100 points(A+ Elementary) divided by 700,000 points (All A+ participating schools) = .0001428 x $330,000* (approximate monthly award) = $47.12
- A+ Elementary earned $47.12 in the month of October
My school is listed as "NOT REGISTERED" what does that mean?
Schools are required to register at the beginning of each program year. Over the summer, all previously participating schools were sent information regarding the registration process. Please contact your school Principal or A+ Coordinator to remind them to register for this year's program. Only registered schools can be supported and only registered schools will receive checks for A+Bonus Bucks awards earned during the 2009-2010 program.
Why do I have to RE-REGISTER my school every year?
Giant needs to have the most updated information every year in order to be able to send checks, letters, e-mails, etc., to the correct address.
What can schools do with the money?
Once your school receives the check, it's up to the school to decide the best way to use it. It could be used to purchase computers, buy new cheerleading uniforms, band instruments, or other useful educational equipment.
How will schools know what they earned?
You can track your school's success by clicking School Account Totals on this website. The totals will be updated monthly starting at the beginning of November.
What if my school is not listed as a participating school?
Schools must enroll to participate in the A+Bonus Bucks Program. Please have your school administrator visit www.giantfood.com/aplus or contact our A+Bonus Bucks Hotline at 1-877-ASK-APLUS (1-877-275-2758) to find out how they can enroll in our program. Keep in mind that all public, private and parochial schools grades K - 12 are eligible to participate, as well as Home Schools. (The program is not open to pre-schools, day-care/after-care centers and other non profit organizations. For information about our fundraising gift card program click here.)
Why does my school have to submit a W-9 Form?
Giant needs to obtain the TIN (Tax Identification Number) in order to have the school set up as a vendor for payment. All accredited schools are issued a tax identification number, but if you are a Home-school, we will need your Social Security Number.
Is the TIN (Tax Identification Number) number the same as the Tax Exempt number?
No, the TIN (Tax Identification Number) number is a 9 digit number given to your school by the IRS, which will help us identify your school as a vendor for payment. The Tax Exempt Number is an 8 digit number that your school needs to be exempt from paying taxes when making purchases.
What Address should I include in the W-9?
You should enter the school's mailing address; the address should also match the address on the school letterhead. If you are a home-school you should include your home's mailing address.
Can the PTO/PTA register their TIN (Tax Identification Number)?
Only accredited schools are allowed to participate in the program. Only school TIN's (Tax Identification Numbers) will be accepted. The payment will be reported for 1099 purposes, therefore, it is crucial to submit the correct TIN (Tax Identification Number).
How can I earn Extra Credit for my school?
To earn Extra Credit for your school, just look for specially marked Extra Credit Items at your store. With each Extra Credit purchased using the Giant Card, you can earn an extra 50 A+Bonus Bucks for your registered school.
How can I find out which items earn Extra Credit?
Extra Credit products are always specially marked throughout the store with their Extra Credit values. Updated lists of Extra Credit products are available in any Giant store and on the A+Bonus Bucks location of the Giant Website www.giantfood.com/aplus.
Are the same items offered for Extra Credit throughout the program?
The Extra Credit products change every two weeks.
After signing up for the Giant Card, customers can support local school(s) (up to three) to benefit from the A+Bonus Bucks Program by choosing the "Register Your Card" link from the menu on this page or by calling the A+Bonus Bucks Hotline at 1-877-ASK-APLUS (1-877-275-2758).
What happens if you support more than one school?
Customers can support up to three (3) schools to benefit from the program. A+Bonus Bucks are divided equally among each school. To ensure all schools receive proper A+Bonus Bucks credit when selecting multiple schools, include each school's ID code. Each time you enroll your Giant Card in a program year, you must include ALL schools (up to three) that you want to support, even if you have previously selected them.
Do I have to register my card every year?
Yes, you MUST register your card every year. In order to perform critical maintenance applications to our A+ database, all of the information in our system is cleared out at the end of the program each year. These updates ensure that the correct school receives your points. This simple effort on the part of each supporter is the only step necessary each year for your school to begin earning their points and CASH through A+Bonus Bucks!
Healthy Ideas
Healthy Ideas is a program designed to help you make healthy food choices for you and your family. By looking for the Healthy Ideas symbol, you can readily identify the most nutritious foods within each aisle of the store.
Why is Giant launching the program?
You, our customers, have asked for an easy way to identify healthy foods in our stores. We are committed to meeting your needs and making it easier for you to shop, cook, and live a healthier lifestyle. Our goal is to clearly mark healthy food choices so that you can make the best food choices when shopping for your family.
How do I know I can rely on the Healthy Ideas symbol?
The strength of the symbol lies within the credibility of the criteria outlined by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the USDA Food Pyramid, and the FDA/USDA definition of healthy. The criteria development team included registered dietitians and nutrition experts. Dr. George Blackburn, who is the Associate Director of Nutrition at Harvard Medical School and author of "Breakthrough Your Set Point", served as an advisor.
How is a food rated for Healthy Ideas? What are the criteria?
The criteria of the Healthy Ideas program are based on
the principles of the US Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2005.
The Dietary Guidelines describe a healthy diet as one that
- Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk
products;
- Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts; and
- Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added
sugars.
The Healthy Ideas criteria reflect these guidelines. The criteria limit:
- Total fat (except for fish, nuts, avocado and oils)
- Saturated fat
- Artificial trans fat
- Cholesterol
- Sodium
- Added sugars in applicable categories
In addition -
- A Healthy Ideas food must contribute at least 10% of the Daily Value for protein,
fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron or calcium.
So, a Healthy Ideas food is an overall nutritious food without being too high in any of
the nutrients we should limit.
Which foods are rated under the Healthy Ideas symbol?
The foods rated in the Healthy Ideas program are foods that fit into one of the food groups designated by the USDA Food Pyramid (MyPyramid.gov). These food groups are fruits, vegetables, grain products, dairy products, protein foods and oils.
Which foods are not rated under the Healthy Ideas symbol criteria?
In order to stay consistent with the USDA Food Pyramid, foods not included,
such as beverages (other than milk, milk alternatives, 100% fruit juice), candy, condiments, jams/jellies, spreads and
desserts were not rated under the Healthy Ideas symbol criteria.
These foods are considered extras to the diet. While these products may be added to foods to enhance flavor or in the
case of desserts, as the ending to a meal, these foods do not form the foundation of your diet.
Are the criteria the same for all foods?
Foods in each of the food groups provide unique contributions to the diet. Therefore, the criteria differ by food group or food category.
If a food does not have a Healthy Ideas symbol, does that mean I shouldn't buy it?
No. We believe in helping customers make an informed positive choice.
The Healthy Ideas symbol helps customers identify the best food choices for overall health. The foods that do not
receive the Healthy Ideas symbol do not satisfy the scientific criteria for Healthy Ideas.
There are also some instances in which a particular food has not yet been rated. As we continue to roll out the program,
we will be adding more Healthy Ideas products to our shelves.
Will foods with the Healthy Ideas symbol be more expensive?
No. In many ways, it may be just the opposite. You will get more nutrition for the money. We continue to offer low prices everyday in many food categories, and the Healthy Ideas symbol does not imply that these high-quality healthy foods are more costly.
Fruits and vegetables are great sources of multiple vitamins and minerals, fiber, and beneficial antioxidants. Fresh fruits and vegetables taste great. However, the canned, frozen, and dried forms are convenient, inexpensive, and easy to prepare. In addition, they are just as nutritious as fresh fruits and vegetables.
Why doesn't bottled water receive the Healthy Ideas symbol?
While bottled water is good for hydration, it does not provide any nutrients, vitamins, or minerals that the USDA and FDA require for a food to be labeled healthy.
Although many cheeses and yogurts provide a good source of calcium, they do not meet the stringent criteria for low saturated fat or controlled sugar. Therefore, they do not meet the criteria for being healthy. However, it is important to get calcium-rich foods, such as low-fat or fat-free milk products every day.
Why are so many grain products included? I thought only whole-grain products were needed.
If you are eating whole grains, you are getting important nutrients and
fiber. Whole grains are considered whole because they contain the entire grain kernel, including the germ (a source
of nutrients), the bran (a source of fiber), and the starchy center. If you are eating whole grains, you are getting
important nutrients and fiber. Refined grains, such as those found in white flour, pasta, bread, and cereal, are milled
to remove most of the healthy bran and germ. However, refined grains are then enriched with minerals and vitamins,
including folic acid, which is an important nutrient for women who may become pregnant. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines for
Americans recommends that at least half your daily servings (3 out of 6) be whole grains.
Also, not all whole grain products in the marketplace are equally healthy. Some contain only minimal amounts of whole
grain. Grain products that contain only minimal amounts of whole grain do not provide enough fiber to pass for Healthy
Ideas.
What meats qualify for Healthy Ideas?
Meat must meet the USDA criteria for "Extra Lean" in order to qualify for the Healthy Ideas symbol. Extra Lean meats include top round roast and steak, pork tenderloin, 96% Lean ground beef and most poultry when eaten without the skin.
I'm trying to lose weight. Will Healthy Ideas help me cut calories?
Research shows that people who eat more healthy foods (which include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and fat free and low fat dairy) for at least 2/3 of their diet are at a healthier weight. By choosing more Healthy Ideas foods, you will be eating an overall healthier diet, which may lead to fewer calories overall.
Why is more fat allowed for fish, nuts and oils?
A healthy diet does consist of some fat, specifically "good fats" known as monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids. Fish, nuts and oils provide more of these "good fats." The Dietary Guidelines recommend that the fat we consume come from foods such as fish, nuts and oils.
Why isn't sugar limited in all categories?
There is a total sugar limit in categories where there tends to be a
wide range in sugar content or where sugar added to the food substantially changes it (such as chocolate covered nuts
which are really a candy).
The Dietary Guidelines acknowledge that a small amount of sugar added to foods that are nutrient dense, such as breakfast
cereal and reduced-fat milk products (such as yogurt), may increase a person's intake of these foods by enhancing the taste
and flavor of these products, thus improving nutrient intake without contributing excessive calories.
Coupons
Double coupon policy: We double the savings marked on manufacturers' cents off coupons up to $.99. Any coupon $1.00 and over will be redeemed at face value. In cases where the double coupon total exceeds the value of the item, the offer is limited to the retail price. Lottery tickets, cigarettes, tax and items prohibited by law are excluded.
Do you accept internet coupons?
We happily accept Internet coupons except in situations where manufacturers have alerted us to specific fraudulent coupons.
Can I get on a mailing list to receive coupons or special offers?
We offer many different types of promotions that are targeted offers to specific
customers at varying times and are based on many different factors. We do not maintain a mailing list that is used for all
offers, due to the fact that offers are being sent to different customers in different locations at different times and for
different reasons.
We recommend that customers make sure their addresses are updated and accurate in our card database, and that there is no
privacy block on their card, where they may have opted out of mailings when they first signed up for the card. If you update
your card information and include your email address, we do sometimes send out email newsletters with offers. You can check
your information on our website, or call our card hotline at 1-877-366-2668.

Does this service apply to both new prescriptions and refills?
Yes. New prescriptions, as well as refills, are eligible for this service.

No. For this service we will not bill any insurance plan.
Is there anything I need to do to join this program?
No. All you need is a prescription from your physician and your Giant Card to receive your free antibiotics.
Resistance to antibiotics is an important issue. Many cough and cold illnesses are caused by viruses as opposed to bacteria. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses. Misuse of antibiotics can cause bacteria to develop resistance to the antibiotics. Ask your physician, as your health care provider is the one best suited to determine whether antibiotics are right for you. To learn more about antibiotic use, visit cdc.gov/getsmart.
